Picasso had a well-documented fascination with primitive art, including prehistoric cave paintings. He famously visited the cave of Altamira, home to some of the most famous examples of Paleolithic art, and was deeply inspired by what he saw. Picasso once said, "After Altamira, all is decadence," suggesting that the raw power and directness of prehistoric art surpassed even the greatest achievements of modern art. He saw in these ancient works a purity and emotional intensity that he sought to capture in his own work, particularly during his periods of Cubism and Primitivism.
