On this day in 1567, the Casket Letters were discovered in a silver casket at Edinburgh Castle. These letters directly implicated Mary, Queen of Scots, in a plot with James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, to murder Mary's husband, Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley.
After the discovery of the Casket Letters, Mary was forced to abdicate, was imprisoned, and eventually fled to England, where she was held captive for 19 years. In 1587, she was executed for her involvement in the Babington Plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I.
Lady never stopped trying to assassinate people apparently. ๐ 13 replies
