Is listening to audiobooks as edifying/educational as reading?

Probably 90% of my reading is now audio, but I don’t think it’s as edifying because it makes information retrieval harder. 

There’s no index. You can’t flip around easily. You can’t underline, highlight, or screenshot text. You can’t scribble or annotate in the margins. (Audio bookmarks don’t cut it.)

Also, when a foreign idea, name, event, book or something else gets mentioned, it’s harder to search. You have to guess at spelling. 

But audio is the only way I can read as much as I like. To read while running, walking, driving, commuting, doing chores is a game changer and makes the sacrifices worth it.
