reminder, even though whatsapp uses the signal protocol, they collect metadata -- who you talk to, timestamps, locations. And more importantly, if you backup via iCloud or Google, those messages are unencrypted and can be used for FBI investigations.

I remember reading this years ago and feeling like TG was the most secure given they weren't compromised by the US or Russia (the stories of Pavel would be greeted by the FBI when he'd visit california for the google dev conference.
