We are sometimes permitted to speak what is beautiful over what is true. This may be what Platoโ€™s Socrates was getting at in his (in)famous passage from Book III of the Republic about the importance of telling a โ€œnoble lieโ€ to all members of a city (ie, rulers and citizens).
