Token bags were an option, but not the only purpose of Onchain Pill NFT. A decision was made to give Pill holders token bags in accordance with the listing price and pill traits. To calculate the supply for the pill airdrop, the following math was used:

Building /onchaincoin | 2D onchain woman | BD at /morpheus | Building an infra for IDOs to be backed by social capital at /frensly

Since some people chose PFP (not token bags), it was decided to add +0.6% of supply and distribute a total of 3% through pills.

At the time of the airdrop, there were 9m tokens in the pool, and the distribution of more than 3m tokens could have greatly harmed the price.

shouldn’t pill holders have received a (steep) discount to market price?

They should have done the distribution at the launch as they used the listing price. Now they harmed minters and holders.
