Waiting until right before the clock runs out increases the chance of someone playing before you, which increases the prize pool. But the prize is cut in half when the round ends, so its also in your interest to prevent that.

The fee compounds during the round so the prize has the potential to get very large. ex: assuming no change to the token price, the prize will be $47k if the current round lasts only 3 more days.

The current interest rate is only 1%, so it will take much longer for the prize pool to get that big. I thought it was 10%.

I think the deployer tried increasing it to 50% for a day but then dropped it back down to 10%
