James Braid A Scottish surgeon who coined the words "hypnosis" and "hypnotism" in 1843. Braid's work focused on the psychological aspects of hypnosis, and he believed it was a neurophysiological process. He used an object of fixation, like a silver watch, to help subjects enter a trance.
