2. At the protocol level, what will you actually own/control as a channel owner? If I can't control who can associate themselves with my channel at the protocol level, do I really own my community?

All that matters is what clients show. If you have a public website, you can't stop people from visiting to it or linking to it.

2) Someone can even spin up a client and show only casts from your channel that you as the owner don’t want to associate with. Like a vampire attack. This is why I keep asking, what do we own at the protocol level? Maybe the answer is not much and that’s ok and I need to reframe my whole thinking around this.

Someone can release a Chrome extension that marks up your webpage? You own the distribution of your main feed on the protocol level. I expect the vast majority of everyday clients to follow the spec since it provides the best user experience.
