It's an ancient Chinese text, given a new translation by the modern author Ursula Le Guin. Many of the older English translations read a bit clunky, like they fit their own patriarchal or other ideology onto it. Le Guin I think is able to tease out some profound passages by making slightly different choices in the translation, which she notes and discusses so you can compare as you go.
