The coin-diameter theory really sang to me. But it seems that during the sameish period, precious metal content in Roman coinage was on a downtrend so coin clipping might have been much less or not at all lucrative. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debasement Maybe was the ur- back-massager ball instead! Great find.
