Cities need to be built with redundancy into their physical systems. Architect Adrian Lahoud describes how “post-traumatic” cities like Beirut or Berlin have been rebuilt in a locally distributed way where everything from barber shops to grocery stores are replicated in each neighborhood. This is unlike many master-planned cities where needs are centralized into segregated areas like strip malls. This “network of redundancy” actually makes for a much more resilient system due to their decentralized and responsive nature.
