I like the behavior. It reminds me of dogecoin tipping on Reddit back in the old days. Which I believe is what made doge so successful. 

Strong agree that the mechanism contribute to reply clutter and isn’t perfect. 

I’d love to drop a tip along with a substantive comment rather than just a stand alone reply.
