underestimate culture and vibes at your absolute peril. blockchains very much are brands. back in the 60s Robert Irwin was frustrated that all the good artists would move from California to New York and a famous dealer told him that no matter your stature, a painting that would sell in 1 day in NY might take weeks or months to sell in LA. if you disagree and think blockchains are just invisible tech try launching yr consumer crypto product on IOTA or Stellar and see how far you get. https://x.com/dwr/status/1852062425773953092

d30 matters less and less when there's not user growth alongside it

Lol brother this is backwards Growth matters less and less when there's no retention preceding it Why attempt to grow something that people use once and stop using?

Maybe it is! My point is that I think you can parrallel path growth and retention opposed to being 100% focused on retention Did early social apps solve for retention or network effects? Why did I come back to Facebook or Myspace in the early days? Because more and more of my friends were there to be social, not to consume content A lot of social media today is really about media and content consumption rather than a social network for me to talk to my friends or connect with a social circle

Early days it was also a way more novel thing, social sites are a dime a dozen now

Yeah totally! And there's entrenched players with strong existing network effects which makes it very hard for new players. A lot of social interactions have moved to messenger apps/platforms. My hope was (is) that FC could be more about social than media My working thesis is that social media was 90% social / 10% media at the start and now it's basically flipped to 90% media / 10% social I think there's a real demand for true social experiences and interactions without forcing content to sit in between. Human connection is more powerful than good content.

I like where your head is at, but I also know the majority of midwits out there don’t want what you are talking about, else we’d see more genuine people round these parts seeking what you’re talking about. People are happy being brainrotted fuckwits on Twitter or tiktok these days.

Fwiw I do think we have a relatively high density of people on FC who are seeking connection with people around various topics, values, beliefs, etc rather than just being here for "content"

I somewhat agree with you, the number of those people seem elevated, though, is it a trend on the socials in general with the “loneliness” epidemic in play, or is it something more exclusive about the minds that found their way here? I still run into plenty of people who don’t like me overstepping their filter bubble beliefs and mute or block me.

Good questions. Social media algos push people into bubbles/echo chambers bc it's comfortable and algos are based on past behavior This may make some people more resistant to alternate perspectives or someone challenging their views that they've had constantly reinforced by the algo

Yes - but the purpose of the algo is content discovery no matter what. Content exists in different product contexts for different purposes. On TikTok, the content is there to entertain - not connect you with people. On Facebook, the content is there to connect you with people - not entertain.

Yeah totally get that. Not sure that FB content is there to connect you with people anymore. It's also there to entertain more than connect imo. The point being is that algos are not social - they are inwardly referential

> algos are not social - they are inwardly referential We agree on this :) But that doesn't change the need for retention before growth
