Tessa Thompson MetGala and her church fan (a term used mainly in the US) with a portrait of Andre Leon Talley. The devil is in the details. Such a fan is very common in churches of African-American communities, because they did not have the opportunity to install air conditioning inside. And so they decided to use the sides of the fans for printed advertising or just illustrations. I read that they were handed out during the service, and then collected so that parishioners did not take them home, and they were useful in church for the next service. Such items are now collectibles.
