Do any of you have any recommendation on how to acquire one of those for a general use in summer occident without looking like a clown? A cool but dried down version from muji / uniqlo / basics ?

You'd most likely look way out of place in a happi. Perhaps settle for a jinbei? Both muji and uniqlo sell them, you could get a fancier one in kimono shops too.
