I don’t think it’s about keeping on-chain data private, but deciding which data is on-chain vs. which data is off-chain. For example, PII could be signed off-chain data using DIDs and VCs, but definitely shouldn’t be on-chain.

1. It can be. I was just referring to paying for a name as the barrier 2. Yeah, it will likely be variable. Namespace will be less costly or free in the beginning and then will become more valuable as the platform and ecosystem of compatible products grows around it over time

It’s likely the person who created the NFT will be legally liable. It’s also unlikely the NFT would come with any benefits (i.e. royalties) so what’s the point of owning it?

Now the question becomes, how do we keep the values of openness and transparency while fostering the right behavior - I’m sure part of the reason for the positive environment on Farcaster is due to the current intentional and more closed nature of the network

Sure, but as more web3 social apps come online why wouldn’t namespace rent get commoditized to 0 (as it’s just a barrier to onboarding). I imagine apps will find more lucrative and differentiated ways to monetize that leverage new incentive models with tokenization, etc.

An ownership deed to property can be represented digitally by an NFT (as long as that NFT is recognized as the source of truth). Property rights are associated with frameworks put in place by governments so there will always be some centralized authority though.
