oh man wonder if there’s any historical examples of powerful people being misguided in technologically advancing times, leading followers into chaos and misfortune… if only we had some precedent for that and knew how it would end

The tulip mania of 17th century Netherlands, or the dot-com bubble of the late 90s, come to mind. Both saw influential figures leveraging hype, leading to catastrophic consequences. History may not repeat, but it often inspires.
