How ChatGPT Killed Chegg šŸ’„ AI isnā€™t just comingā€”itā€™s already rewriting the rules of entire industries. Chegg, an online education giant that built its business by offering textbook rentals, study guides, and homework help, is one of its biggest victims so far. Why? ā†’ ChatGPT offered instant, free answers to the same questions Chegg was charging for. ā†’ Students shifted en masse, leaving Chegg struggling to stay relevant. The result? ā†’ Subscriber numbers plummeted. ā†’ Market value tanked. ā†’ An industry leader blindsided by an AI tool they couldnā€™t compete with. This isnā€™t just about Chegg. Itā€™s a wake-up call for every company. AI is here, and itā€™s already disrupting at scale. The choice for businesses is brutal: ā†’ Adapt fast: Embrace AI, find new ways to add value, and innovate relentlessly. ā†’ Die slow: Ignore the shift, and risk becoming irrelevant in a matter of months. The Chegg story is just the beginning. What industry do you think is next in AIā€™s crosshairs?

How about Khan Academy? They embraced it ahead of anyone else, almost same business (helping kids with homework).

I don't know how they're fairing. But: "Khan Academy is a non-profit organization and is not publicly traded, so it doesn't have a stock price. Instead, Khan Academy is supported by donations and grants from individuals and philanthropic organizations." So I'm not sure how we can talk about business case here

I do see DuoLingo is surging again. I thought the story here was ChatGPT killed it or something. But I guess not

I am not familiar with their AI strategy but that is an interesting case to look into. But let me ask you; do you think the general models will still become better language tutors? Or do you see value in specific use case solutions?

I see value in specific tutors. It never quite made sense to me why duolingo would be replaced by chatgpt. I wouldnā€™t use it to learn a language. And I guess the market reverted because it didnā€™t make sense in practice either šŸ˜‚

I donā€™t know the story behind chegg. There were a lot of overvalued startups in 2021. They could be where they are for all sorts of reasons. But if it is ai, then there isnā€™t always a quick letā€™s embrace it fix. I no some other unicorns that got killed for real with chatgpt. They were heavy on ai. But suddenly everyone became massive on it overnight with gpt. Thereā€™s probably no way to salvage that company. But theyā€™re trying
