They are building a physics lab, the basement structure will be completely separated from the ground and surroundings with dampers to minimize vibrations to sensitive measuring equipment inside.

It is not a hyperbole if I say it is a foundation to probe deep questions about our universe - laser interferometry is a technique to measure miniscule contractions in space-time and requires special conditions to be implemented.

I heard one lab on the campus is shooting a ray of antimatter particles to figure out if it "falls" away from the center of Earth... antigravity basically. To measure that you either need a very long tube or just a very precise distance measurement - done with laser interferometry.
