Big source of inspiration at the moment. I went to check out Carl’s work around early March at a university gallery in Philadelphia and was moved by his ability to show observable scientific phenomena through a creative lens. A lot of his work as I’ve come to sit with it felt like a tactile documentary on the forces of nature impacted by our meddling and its reclamation as we discard and neglect the objects we’ve made. There is a strong fixation he had in the mechanical deconstruction of nature from the various forms its takes to the how we view nature through our own devices (he has an insane body of work with photographs where he uses custom viewfinders to “extract” objects out of their environment and leave in space). It’s not only artistic in message, but his compositions typically confound the constitution of what art traditionally is and how it’s presented.
