Took a 20 minute Uber today, cost me $19.89. Driver took home a little over $5. Uber's take is 75% - that seems surprisingly high. I would have expected a split closer to 50-50.

I despise Uber for this and similar reasons. If I need a ride I call a cab. In fact, the largest cab company here has an app, so it’s as easy as Uber. Select pickup and destination, pay with Apple Pay, watch the little car icon until it gets to your door. Cab drivers here are also very interesting people to talk to. Most have lived in 3 or more major cities around the world. I don’t think the economics of driving a cab are great, TBH, but it’s got to be better than Uber.

Let me add: I am not saying the taxi business here is not exploitative. It most likely is. Drivers usually don’t own the plate, but drive for someone who does. The plates cost tens of thousands. The cops also seem to target cabs. But at least no mega tech corp is getting filthy rich off the backs of thousands & thousands of drivers barely scraping by.
