After almost a month away from social media, I have to confess that the initial anxiety is replaced over time by peace. My hope is that you don't read this post, because you are out in the real world. If you do read me don’t hate me, don’t like the post, just close the app!!

There has always been disinformation and minformation, but social media and AI have given an unprecedented boost to this significant problem for society.

There are various theories, one of which defends the value neutrality of science. This theory is based on the distinction between facts and values and asserts that scientific theories aim to describe and explain facts, rather than making value judgments about them.

"How do social networks decide which users to verify or ban? How do search engines decide how to rank websites?" Written 6 years ago by @cdixon.eth, does not get old: https://a16zcrypto.com/posts/article/control-software-powers-internet/

It seems that there is a war between tech and humanities. I can't help but believe that most of us think that one is useful and the other is not. It is worth reminding ourselves how important the influence of technology is on how we live and interact.

Although this debate seems new, it is worth noting that it goes back as far as Plato and Aristotle.

For my next paper I am analysing where we stand in the pendulum technocracy / democracy. In some countries (like Spain, where I am from), or the US, we would definitly hand the keys of our democracy to the guys running OpenAI and the likes. No good.

A reminder of how difficult is to find a good enough system for any group of people trying to live together. Social networks are a brutal challenge. Kudos to @a16zcrypto . Tech guys usually think they know everything, inviting constitutional law specialists to anything named web3 is disruptive to say the least. https://open.spotify.com/episode/3zEFhPDPLL7RpVCEgW02W3?si=rklury-ISfOghW6P4Egyvw

We are all used to progress, have you ever thought about a future where humans reach the limit?

The current dynamics of social networks, where we are incentivized to produce a lot short form content + the arrival of AI generated content, will end up exhausting us, hopefully. We will look for the old forums, where we cannot recast, where we will need to write a minimum of characters to have a proper debate…

With so much noise, what do you think will be the future of social networks? Do you think that the options will be limited (as today)? Or maybe we will see a new era of niche networks as well as private / exclusive platforms?

Authors like Marshall McLuhan or Kevin Kelly argue that technology and humans are intimately linked, evolving together. Jeff Bezos, in his 2007 investor letter, defended a similar idea. In that letter, he mentions how writing or books have profoundly changed us. He also highlighted how smartphones are changing us, turning us into information scanners, in contrast to deep and leisurely reading: https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1018724/000119312508084145/dex991.htm How are social networks (centralized and decentralized), changing us?

I honestly believe we are giving to much credit to decentralization. It won't be the solution to the huge problems for liberal democracy we are dealing with today. Without the right mechanisms, Farcaster will end up having the same content moderation issues, problems with misinformation...
