The photo was taken in March 1945 during the Battle of Iwo Jima - an American soldier offers a smoke to a Japanese soldier. Interestingly, the Japanese soldier had been lying with a grenade for 1.5 days, waiting for the Americans, but missed. The cigarette was given to him in exchange for surrendering.
