Slowly, then all at once!

As from January 2025 European banks will be allowed to hold Crypto-Assets on their balance sheets.

That was good news, but it comes at a cost: The risk add-ons on their BS are highly prohibitive for the banks to do so!

The German Banking Association now has some interesting proposal!

They argue, that the risk of holding Crypto differs depending on the underlying Blockchain (that obvious).

And: They believe that permissionless, public Chains are better suited / more secure!

It becomes more interesting: They propose Crypto Assets held in "isolated environments on top of public blockchains" should have the same risk-add-ons like traditional assets.

tldr: Private Chains are deader than dead. Banks want to build and use (permissioned) ETH L2s.
