Do you know? The first mention of the prisoner in the iron mask is contained in the "Secret Notes of the Persian Court" published in 1745. Their author reports that the prisoner was Louis XIV's son, the Count of Vermandois, born as a result of his extramarital affair with the Duchess de la Valliere. He was convicted of slapping the Great Dauphin, who was his brother.
