I am a lawyer, but not in the US. First thing is, laws can be hundreds of years old. Language changes over time. Secondly, every word conveys a specific meaning. In every day situations some may be used as synonyms but at closer look, they will have different effects, which can change outcomes of cases immensely. Also: If laws are written simply in a general way, they leave great room for interpretation. This goes against the concept of legal certainty. But we all want to know possible legal outcomes of our decisions, right? Happy to be proven wrong, come for me MIT π
