the only incentive i could think of is that if users are nuked, entire market gets nuked for a while — and they'd like to avoid that?

Not sure why they would. It looks like a hole in the ground.

Worse if CZ feels compelled to for some reason.

Perhaps it's part of CZ's 4d chess. First trigger a run on FTX, then pretend to save it. Can't see the point of saving it though.
