It was Peter I who came up with the idea of putting up a New Year tree – or rather, branches. Christmas trees were not decorated with toys. After the death of the king, “pagan trees” were no longer erected, but tavern owners, on the contrary, erected Christmas trees on the roofs of their establishments. The expression “to go under the tree” meant to go to a tavern. The trees stood on the roof until the needles fell off and the branches became like sticks. This is how the expression “tree-stick” arose, meaning annoyance.
