This Friday at 3pm ET, I’m hosting an AMA with @eugene in this channel! He’s an incisive student of tech, authoring classics like Status as a Service and Seeing like an Algorithm. Ask him about social networks, consumer product, and insights from his years as a product exec at Oculus, Hulu, and Flipboard!

Do you see the ongoing fragmentation of social networks across new and existing platforms/protocols as the new normal?

Yes. Probably a good thing? Global scale social media doesn't feel like a stable thing, and we always already had fragmentation due to language and cultural barriers, not to mention actual barriers like the Great Firewall. But the heyday of social media was a hell of a thing while it lasted.

Ya that totally tracks - it's been interesting to see how certain platforms have responded to this, particularly in some instances by shifting to directly monetizing their userbase (ie: Twitter premium). Is there anything that's surprised, or stood out to you, in terms of how certain platforms are adjusting here?
