Finished this, good read. I had the impression that it was a wacky curiosity superseded by better neuroscience, but the brain stuff is the least important part.

I agree with this SSC review (which is a great summary). The weaker claim that human minds were weird and different very recently and probably coevolved with language and culture is interesting on its own without getting into consciousness.

Extremely interesting in the LLM chatbot era: am I Claude's bicameral god?
