Had lunch with a teen & his dad b/c kid wanted some advice on choosing between Computer Science and Software Engineering. Eventually he told me he wanted to be a game dev. Every teen I talk with before they head off to Uni says the same. None of them make it. He’s ngmi, either.

Also I ask every kid who wants to do CS, whether game dev or other: what have you made? The answer is *always*: nothing. I cannot relate. They’ve had computers in the house since they were born & never once thought of, say, making an add-on for their fav game? Anything, really? I’m old but these kids are strange.

Agree, that’s strange. I quickly focused on how to make the computer do things, when I grew up.

I was so into coding as a kid that I brought manuals with me on family vacation and wrote code on paper since I didn’t have a computer at hand, eager to get home to try it out.

Those calculators were fantastic devices. Great way to get started.

I remember coding on a TI82 in high school, making apps to share with classmates.

Books and magazines were so important back then. Getting my hands on a new edition of Wired was like Christmas morning every time.

I learned to program my dad’s programmable TI calculator. 😀 It’s all I had. I also read books about computers and computer music and graphics.
