no doubt we’re witnessing new socio-economic dynamics here on farcaster. the social primitives and building blocks allow for entirely new types of experiments. i can speak from our experience building /farville. what’s been fascinating is seeing the game grow without any explicit incentives - just dopamine, friends, and a bit of competition. (we only announced weekly leagues and rewards yesterday.) and to me, that feels like healthy growth. so why didn’t we launch a token? a few reasons: 1. legal concerns - we currently operate from the EU 2. fun should come first - launching a token risks shifting the focus 3. pressure - introducing a token adds expectations we didn’t want from day one we still think onchain games can be super compelling with things like collectibles or p2p mechanics, tokens aren’t the only tool. so yeah, i agree tokens can be a huge opportunity, but they’re not always the answer. if forced or done wrong, they can break more than they fix.

That’s definitely a very reasonable position. The gaming industry has indeed achieved massive success without needing tokens. What time will tell, however, is whether tokens can become a meaningful competitive advantage that truly disrupts the sector. It’s hard to imagine the success of projects like Bitcoin or Ethereum without their tokens — and the truth is that blockchain-based initiatives that deliberately avoided tokenization have generally created only marginal value. DeFi is another clear demonstration of this new paradigm we call the Ownership Economy, which is difficult to articulate without tokens to represent some form of ownership or alignment. When it comes to gaming, experiments so far have certainly shown their power to attract attention — some reaching hundreds of millions of active users. Still, many ended in disappointment: Axie Infinity, Star Atlas, Sorare, Hamster… just to name a few.

That said, I do believe a new entertainment industry will emerge from all of this — not only from the player's perspective, but also through professional services and ecosystems that enrich the gaming experience. Of course, it’s going to become increasingly difficult to distinguish between human players and AI agents. But perhaps that’s where the social layer of gaming becomes most important — it’s in those online connections where real human value is created. And beyond pure entertainment, we should also acknowledge that gamification, in a broader sense, can be a powerful tool within work environments and beyond.
