I was really excited to finally visit Rome - so much art and architecture was on my list. What I discovered was an underlying heavy and uncomfortable energy throughout the city - particular at the Colosseum. It came as a surprise considering how exciting it was that they were digging out the underground parts at that time. Now open to the public, this is the backstage area for the horrors that took place for spectators. I couldn't shake how people were posing inside with smiles and laughter. The energy there was so thick and intense that there was nothing to smile about - rather, just observe and take it all in. This picture hits it right on the nose, @erikx. Per our conversation on the places we've photographed and the unspoken moments that shook us to our core - Rome and the Colosseum are right up there with some of the most intense places I've ever experienced. These days, I still see selfies and smiles - this place runs much deeper.

Beautifully said Heather. I was also very excited to visit Rome, but not for reasons you might think. Sure, the art and sense of history is amazing and definitely tantalizing. Selfishly, I had only a visit to the legendary store Profondo Rosso, owned by Dario Argento on the front of my mind. I've waited many years to visit and was not disappointed. 😅❤️

Thank you, Erik! I haven't stopped thinking about Rome and the Colosseum since our little chat. I enjoyed the city, and that sounds fabulous. I was almost a decade deep into art history at that time and had no one holding me back. I moved with intention and had a list everywhere I visited, lol. I did enjoy the nightlife often and went out in the evenings, dancing or to small places for a glass of wine. I treated myself to a fine dinner as well to get a taste of the culinary excitement, too. Oh boy, the stories - I had a blast ;)

Ahhh, it sounds like you are due for that trip! I did all of the cities I visited that way. It was a blast. I joked that my only companions were my backpack and Djarum Black clove cigarettes 😂 Ofc, I met travel companions and many people along the way.
