The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in northern Ukraine. The incident was the worst civilian disaster in world history and caused the release of radioactive material over large areas of the Soviet Union, parts of Belarus, Ukraine, and the Russian Federation.

The affected areas, including parts of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia, suffered from increased rates of cancer, birth defects, and other health issues in the years following the accident.
