Flamingo: The word “flamingo” comes from the Spanish and Latin word “flamenco,” meaning fire, referring to the bright color of their feathers. Flamingos live in shallow lakes, mangrove swamps, and sandy islands across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Interestingly, flamingos hold their breath while eating. The pink, orange, or red color of a flamingo’s feathers comes from the carotenoid pigments in its diet, which includes shrimp, plankton, algae, and crustaceans. The backward-bending “knee” of a flamingo is actually its ankle. Its real knee is much closer to the body and is hidden beneath its feathers.
