Where Did HIV Come From?

HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is believed to have originated from chimpanzees in Central Africa.
It likely crossed to humans in the early 1900s through bushmeat hunting, when people handled or consumed monkey meat and came into contact with their blood.

In 1981, doctors in the U.S. noticed rare infections and cancers in young, healthy men.

The rumors saying that HIV spread because of raping monkeys have no scientific evidence.
The virus likely jumped species through natural interactions during hunting.

Although there’s no complete cure for HIV yet, but there are effective treatments called antiretroviral therapy (ART). These medicines control the virus, help people live long, healthy lives, and prevent the spread of HIV to others.
