FARCASTLES: CHAPTER ONE – THE CALL

The day Ern discovered he was a soldier, it was raining. Not the heroic kind of rain either—no thunderclaps, no silver torrents bouncing off glinting armor. Just a steady, grey drizzle that made the mud cling to his boots and his thoughts stick to the bottom of his brain like wet wool.

Ern was not particularly brave, nor clever. He mended fishing nets for a living in a village that barely had fish, let alone nets. He’d never seen a sword up close, never been further than the next town over, and couldn’t tell you which Castle was North and which was South without looking at the moss on the trees.

He’d heard of the War, of course. Everyone had. The never-ending War. Two ancient Castles, Red and Blue, locked in some eternal, senseless struggle.

We are all Ern. It’s almost enough to make you feel for the Northerners… almost
