ENS Labs is excited to announce our proposal to extend the ENS protocol to a Layer 2 network. This move isn't just about migrating parts of the protocol; we're re-envisioning the architecture from the ground up!

Since 2017, ENS has evolved from a simple blockchain naming service to critical infrastructure for the Internet. With millions of .eth names registered and thousands of integrations, ENS has become the bridge between the traditional internet and the decentralized web.

As web3 goes mainstream and more users onboard, scaling constraints have emerged. Thankfully, Ethereum's "rollup-centric" roadmap addresses this with L2 networks. They offer lower gas costs and faster transactions, making web3 more accessible to a wider range of users.

Beyond the benefits of reduced gas fees and increased transaction speeds, extending ENS to use an L2 opens the door for us to re-architect ENS based on the last 7 years of our experience building at the frontier.

We've long been monitoring the state of the L2 ecosystem while also contributing with internal innovations such as CCIP-Read and the EVM Gateway. We believe that now is the right time for us to begin moving parts of ENS, such as .eth name registration, to L2.
