Man, I'm visiting my sister. We haven't seen each other in a while and we don't talk much. I decided to drive in from out of town without calling. I was freezing on the way there. I thought I'd have some hot tea at my sister's. She works from home, so she should definitely be home. When I arrive, no one opens the door, I call her phone, she's not available. I haven't been on the internet for two days. I call my mom, and it turns out my sister went out of town with her boyfriend to celebrate the corporate party. Yeah, I surprised my sister. I had to go back to the bus station and get a ticket home. Winner in life.

I've been living with my girlfriend for three years. She got pregnant, everything seems fine. She does everything around the house, works, gives her time to me and doesn't like to go out. And I'm an active person, it's hard for me to sit at home and lately we have nothing to talk about when we are together. She just annoys me, she doesn't seem to do anything wrong, but the irritation is unbearable. I don't say anything to her because of her pregnancy. I don't want to upset her and I'm already thinking of working a shift, but I'm getting jealous and this and that, what do you advise?

My contribution to the Friendsgiving last night— roasted broccoli with salsa macha aioli. 

I’ve been loving this dish recently. Super easy upgrade for roasted broccoli, cauliflower, romanesco, etc. 

Toss the broccoli with salt and EVOO, roast at 420 for 15 min or so (until it’s cooked through and slightly charred).

Mix together 2 parts mayo (I recommend Chosen Foods avocado oil mayo or homemade), 1 part salsa macha, and a big squeeze of lime juice and salt to taste. 

Toss the roasted broccoli with the sauce until it’s well-covered. Finish with another squeeze of lime and some chopped cilantro. 

For salsa macha— homemade is best, but there are a few brands out there making versions with good oils. This would also work well with a more Chinese-style chile crisp instead.

My own sister all her life, cranky, willful, straightforward. She treats men with a slight contempt. Does not wear skirts and heels, loves herself very much and always chooses her comfort. Doesn't judge at all, good for her on the contrary. We thought she wouldn't get married, but she did. Her husband has been carrying her in his arms for 15 years, carries her around, looks at her with loving eyes, flowers, deliveries, cleaning, meets her and does everything as she wants. Loves her to bits. And I am feminine, easy going, calm, compromising. I have two divorces due to beatings and cheating... Now I think maybe I need to be like my sister?

After my divorce from my husband, I suffered and then decided that life goes on. I started getting to know men and going on dates. I like the lightness and romanticism of first dates. When you are all so beautiful and light, sit and listen to a man, not perform the role of a vest and pulling. Especially after work is so uplifting. I pull so 3-4 dates and then, when they start trying to reduce everything to bed, I move off the subject immediately....

In active addiction, or untreated addiction and untreated mental health, we are existing, barely living life. Going through the motions, moment to moment, maybe hoping for the dreadful end to come. Maybe thinking there's no end in sight. Maybe thinking life gets no better than this. 

When we start treating our addiction and our mental health, we start living. We don't just merely exist anymore. As Alcoholics Anonymous says, we don't get well just to become a glum lot. We get to do things we could not do before. We get to go on vacations. We get to enjoy going to work. We get to be a part of society once again. We become useful and whole, like never before. 

Although life might not change when we change, our perception changes. When our perception changes, everything around us changes. This has been my experience for the last almost 12 years, one day at a time. I must continue to work on my perception each and every day. Perception starts anew every day.
