Depends. If there’s a fee for a trade and you earn a dividend then that’s clear where the money is coming from.

Although very different to YouTube.

If you’re getting rewarded for staking it’s also clear where it’s coming from but it’s also clear that many will lose money when price crashes.

Even in web2 there are many models. And I wouldn’t put them in the same bucket.

What you have in web3 is speculation. Most dexs generate very little fees.

When you stake on a protocol with no revenue you’re hoping the tokens you get are worth more than the inevitable price drop.

DEX earns fees and subsidizes to get liquidity and users, not really different than hosting services by web2 companies
