As noted in Chapter 1, during the early 1960s, English professor Marshall McLuhan wrote two books that had an enormous effect on the history of media studies. Published in 1962 and 1964, respectively, the Gutenberg Galaxy and Understanding Media both traced the history of media technology and illustrated the ways these innovations had changed both individual behavior and the wider culture. Understanding Media introduced the phrase that McLuhan has become known for: “The medium is the message.” This notion represented a novel take on attitudes toward media—that the media themselves are instrumental in shaping human and cultural experience.

When media consumers think of media messages, they may think of televised public service announcements or political advertisements. These obvious examples provide a venue for the transfer of a message through a medium, whether that message is a plea for fire safety or the statement of a political position. But what about more abstract political advertisements that simply show the logo of a candidate and a few simple words? Media messages can range from overt statements to vague expressions of cultural values.

Alternatively, the information collected in the first example—that people in a given group have different hair texture that can be described and grouped by category—is what we usually call qualitative data. Qualitative data is observable or measurable information that is not (typically) numerical in nature. Writing and Talking about Data: What can we do with it and what should we do with it? While the distinction between these two types of data can be valuable, it’s important to recognize that there are not hard and fast boundaries between the two. Qualitative judgments are often made about quantitative data, and quantitative judgments can be used to manipulate qualitative data:“All quantitative data is based upon qualitative judgments; and all qualitative data can be described and manipulated numerically.”

I had the chance to try the famous Mariscos Jalisco taco truck. But the real highlight wasn’t the crispy bite of the legendary taco it was watching a young boy savor his, completely immersed in the experience.
