It's clearly a case of a circle jerk gone horribly wrong

Fun fact: growing up, a kid I knew had an internship at a small town newspaper with an old school printing press

He somehow got it in his head that it was fun to run his finger along the edge of the inky printing press roller as it operated 

One day, his finger tip stuck on a dry spot of the press and it tore the skin off half of his hand

The local doctors somehow managed to put it all back together, but it was a horribly painful process involving skin grafts and many surgical operations
