The spam filtering dilemma

Sharing how we think about it so people can better understand:

1. Most people will only use social networks if they are fun

2. Casting something and getting dozens of spammy replies is not fun

3. If you get enough spammy replies, you'll just stop using the app

4. So, aggressively filtering for spam is necessary to keep your existing users happy

5. However, this means some good new users will hit spam filters. Understatement: this is a bad user experience for those people. It would be great to not have this happen.

6. But given the choice of who to make unhappy — an existing user who has invested a ton of time and energy into the network or a new user that is most likely to churn (top tier social networks lose 50% of users!), then you have to optimize for your existing users.

7. So does that mean you don’t care about new users? No! It’s existential to have new users be able to join Farcaster and find people to connect with — without being labeled as spam.

PSA: changes coming Warpcast spam controls.

take note, this is /specific/ to Warpcast client. The protocol is, as always, permissionless. These changes do not necessarily affect other clients.

in summary, if you:
>too-often reply to users who don't follow you
>and those users don't interact with your replies
>you'll eventually get a /single/ warning from warpcast (notifs).
>if you relax, great. carry on and enjoy your visibility.
>if you persist, you'll be labeled as spam and your replies hidden.

so you're spam. whoops. now what?
>at first and for awhile, nothing.
>flagged users will be reevaluated eventually (weeks later).
>this review system needs to be built (doesn't exist yet).
>as planned, users who demonstrate good behavior may be restored.

but as varun notes, this remediation system doesn't exit yet. for the time being, treat Warpcast's spam flagging as permanent. Be careful, frens 🌹

My methodical approach to building relationships with new ppl on FC:

Pick a few accounts with whom it might be possible to build a relationship based on shared interests

For example, I've met many interesting people through /parenting

Turn on notifications for those people and pick careful moments for genuine engagement

Don't spam them with replies, but when you see something where you have a high-value-added contribution, reply with that information

I've been able to slowly make new relationships in this space that way without being marked as a spammer

I also improve my position in the social graph while doing so, thereby increasing the likelihood that the algorithm won't hide my replies to other people

My understanding of how the algorithm works is that replies following this method are less likely to be hidden under the "show more replies" drop down (I would love to learn if I am mistaken)

My understanding is also that the power badge no longer applies, so it should no longer be a differentiator

How do you adapt when the system hides you in the first place? It’s like trying to get out of a maze you didn’t realize you were in while in the dark. 

I do agree that a person must adapt and always be willing for change as it does seem constant.
