Why do I need to connect my wallet to do that?

One we approve you you’ll need to access the training system with your wallet

But, fundamentally, why is a wallet connection required? Feels like a security red flag.

I haven't been minting much lately, seems pointless

It's not. We don't ask for any kind of approvals when logging in with wallet for requesting model training. It's purpose is to verify you own your onchain artworks which are the source material for model training.
