Is your career path linear or nonlinear?

Some people have careers that follow a straight line—each job is just a step toward a better role. For others, the path twists and turns, taking unexpected detours. As the world changes, so are career paths. There are a lot more people doing side gigs and starting small businesses. 

My own career path has been anything but traditional. I skipped college to run a pizza franchise and when that didn’t work out, I taught myself SEO. That led to a combination of side gigs, businesses, and now a more traditional career. My struggles with addiction made this journey more difficult but also taught me invaluable skills that I use everyday. 

How has your career path shaped you? Has it been a straightforward journey, or has it taken a few unexpected turns along the way? What lessons have you learned?

once you promote out of a niche specialty into consulting, it's more in terms of trying to provide ever greater value to justify increased compensation rather than some kind of career progression with increasingly important job titles
