Markets are down. It's the time to dust of philosophy books and start tweeting about convinction and philosophical ideas. Gotta love this industry.

I'm currently reading Geoff Mann's treatise on Keynes, which seems very apropos - &I've been struck by the background material from Marx: "[H]istory does not just happen, it has to be made" - & from Robespierre: "I would not destroy commerce at all, only the monopolist's brigandage; I would sentence them only to the punishment of allowing their fellows to live." Robespierre's 1792 statement was in response to a Girondin proposal to meet the food crisis with "[U]nlimited freedom of trade, and bayonets to calm fears or appease hunger...” Today, there is famine again in Darfur and in South Sudan - while in America, documentaries herald the fact that San Francisco throws away 160 tons of food each day, but they turn it into useful compost, yay! As Robespierre pointed out, if some can starve while others “amass piles of wheat” (or waste tons of edible food daily) then the problem is clearly not a matter of scarcity. Tagging @thecurioushermit & @epicdylan who I know have an interest in /philosophy
