My husband spends every penny of his salary. We split the rent and groceries in half, and the rest we manage at our own discretion. We started a special account where we were supposed to put some of the remaining money to save up for the down payment. We talked and my husband said that if he does not make at least one major purchase from his salary during the month, he feels that he works for nothing. He needs regular motivation in the form of buying gadgets and expensive clothes. His salary is more than mine, but only I contribute to the coffers. I'm in my third year with one phone and buy clothes as needed, and I don't consider it a great sacrifice.
