Superrare image A red rainbow, like other rainbows, is created by the reflection of light in water droplets, but the sunlight must be very close to the horizon. Since this phenomenon occurs in low light conditions, it can be very spectacular. This type of rainbow sometimes occurs at sunrise or sunset when shorter wavelengths of light, such as blue, violet, and green, are scattered and removed from the visible spectrum, leaving only longer wavelengths (red) visible.
