Sort of. Uber needed a decent network size for it to be valuable. They didn’t use tokens, but they burned a lot of money to attract that initial supply base of drivers and riders. Network bootstrapping is really effing hard. Tokens are a new tool in the kit to attempt a bootstrap, though it has its flaws.
